Default Water pump question - 76 C3

Adding a ball valve to the 'suction side' of the water pump to shut off the flow of coolant going into the heater core in the summer months. There are two water pump hoses going to the heater core;

a) hose from the top of the manifold to the heater core (smaller hose)
b) hose from the water pump to the heater core (larger hose)

What side is considered the 'suction side'? I think it's the larger hose from the water pump to the heater core - but making sure.

Thanks,

Mike

Yes Sir; If you stop the flow on either side, small hose or large hose, it stops the flow, through the heater core. The small hose, use a 3/4 " Pex ball valve, the large hose use a 1 " Pex ball Valve. Two hose clamps for each Valve. Have a Great Memorial Day. Gene

The hose on the pump is suction, manifold is pressure.

Put the valve in the manifold side.

Gene,

I'm confused.. If the flow is in one direction, the objective is not to allow the hot coolant to enter the heater core. So I would think it would be wise installing the ball valve in line before the coolant reaches the heater core to avoid heat, correct?

If I install the valve on the "exit" side this would mean the coolant would have access to the heater core (hot) although the coolant cannot flow.

I think the intent is to install it on the side before the coolant reaches the heater core so my wife won't complain about her feet getting too hot.

I'm I right or am I not thinking clearly?

yes, the one connected to the pump is the suction side, should've been more clear.

If it can't come out it can't go in. I have found the 5/8 hose cutoff is easier to find. I got mine at the auto parts store, Four Seasons brand. They last about 10yrs. before the shaft seal starts to leak. mike...

The water pump sucks coolant from the bottom of the radiator, and pumps it through the engine. The coolant comes out of the engine through the thermostat housing on the front of the intake manifold, and goes to the top of the radiator. So, the coolant gets pumped into the heater core through the hose coming out of the intake manifold, and gets sucked into the water pump. As long as you cut off one of them, no flow through the heater core. Ya dig?
