my voltage is jumping around from 2 to 13 volts.Had alternator checked its good. The car is a 69 should it have an external voltage regulator or internal regulator and would it make a difference.Checked ground wire good and tight.Battery only drains when running.Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.
Without knowing the model number of the alternator we cannot tell if it has an internal regulator or not. If it is the stock alternator (still would like either a pic or a #) then I believe the regulator is external.
Alternator checked by a mechanic? Then he should know the regulator answer, and if external he should have checked that also.
placed volt meter on alternator and battery with car off and it holds a steady 12.70 volts.I start the car and perform the same test and the voltage starts jumping around. What caused me to check was the car battery drained when running but holds the charge when not running.Auto parts store said alternator checks good.
