Bought a B& M shift kit last night . Dropped the pan and .......... well let's just say things don't look right. The plates provided in the kit don't match the original. I know that they will be some what different do to the mod but, some of the bolt holes don't line up. When I went back to the parts store and look at the other kits none of them even match the transmission pan style. The new gasket will fit the pan.... is this because my tranny is a 350 Turbo Hydro C
How can I tell what type of transmission I have. I am pretty sure it is the original tranny. It is a 1980 L-82 350 Vin # 1Z876AS439556
You need the B&M Transpak kit #30235. It's in a box- not the large envelope that the shift improver kit comes in. The Transpak is also about twice the price of the improver. You will replace a few springs in the valve body that you don't touch with the Shift Kit. I freaked a bit when I got the Transpak but it really wasn't that big a deal and I had it done in a few hours. I think Summit sells them for $56 or there abouts. I paid $65 for mine locally but I had everything apart (as you do) and really didn't want to wait. :smash:
Good luck with it,
John
Thanks for the info folks !! I can't find the required trans kit here in Vegas. What a drag. I did come across a speed shop that works exclusively on Chevy's and steered me away from the B&M Shift Kit. Had to have the Vette towed to their shop :(
I'm going to have a Superior Modification Kit installed on Tuesday...what a drag, a nice holiday weekend and no Vette!
He explained how the B&M just slams your transmission into the next gear by removing all of the lag. The mod he does is by trail and error that has been proven at the strip. I didn't understand all of the part names he mentioned that would be changed/modified. The shop has an excellent rep. around town for turning better 1/4 times at the strip. All said and done I'm looking at about $350 including towing to the shop.
I had the B & M transpak in my last car. It didn't shift too hard unless you were driving it hard and I really liked it. The transmission shop I use highly recommended it or the use of a similar product to me. Because of the quicker shift, I understand that transmission life is enhanced.
