Replacing door WS on my 81 and on left side rear pillar, once I removed the old dry-rotted rubber and rust, I found this stainless plate glued onto the pillar (see red arrow). What is this? Is it a shim under the WS or is it something that was internal to the WS? Something else? Should I remove it or leave it there? It seems much more securely glued in than the WS was.
My first post, but have been reading many others for last 6 months or so, and really appreaciate everyone's help!
That is a weatherstrip retainer and they do not make reproductions. Not sure about later models but on my 71 its riveted in place. I cant see your photo either just going by your description.
Thanks guys. Sorry about the pic - I can see it, not sure why you can't... but anyway, I guess I'll leave it there. Doesn't seem like it wants to come out anytime soon.

I can see it now. As suspected that is the weatherstrip retainer.

There could be rivets or screws on the backside. The assembly instruction manual (AIM) shows how it was installed. I am guessing you will also find factory sealant under it.
I have 78; the new weather strip I bought from Davies has metal reinforcement strip molded inside new pillar weatherstrip piece. I removed the metal strip (popped off rivets); now new piece fits nicely. Unless your new weatherstip has no metal in it;then this strip of metal has to be removed. Just saying...
