Default McGard lug nuts

I need new wheel nuts for my 80-82 aluminum rims . I used my trusty digital caliper and spec'ed McGard 61001 lug nuts .
Any one use these or do I go with specific aluminum wheel lug nuts ?
The stock aluminum wheel lug nuts have a built-in washer which is nice , but they have a small extension into the hole of the rim . I'd like to have more support of the stud in the hole of the rim .
I've got a 454 with a manual trans and plan on hopping it up with a cam and headers .

Do you intend to road race this car that you are worried about the amount of material extending into the rim? These are the standard nuts and they should be sufficient for anything other than extreme conditions providing they are properly torqued.

It will be a street machine with the occasional trip to the Sat. night drags . I'll have drag radials on it and plan on taking it pretty easy off the line . I don't want half shafts and rearend components laying on the start line . I'm just concerned about how much of the wheelstud is supported by stock lugnuts . I'm going to buy a pack of McGard 61001 wheel nuts and see how they fit into the rims plus their length with the washer . Thanks for the recommendation .

Default Wheel nut info

Bought a pack of McGard 61001 wheel nuts today and compared them to the stock aluminim rim wheel nuts .
The McGard ones are slightly smaller diameter than the stockers ; causing more clearance in the rim hole . The washer fits the rim register perfectly and the wheel nut extends all the way in to fit flush with the back side of the rim . If the register for the washer was worn and sunk in deeper , the wheel nut would bottom out on the rotor ( not good ) .
So .... I'm going to buy some stock wheel nuts and be done with this experiment .

That type of nut is old tech and a bastard shank size at that.
Most modern wheels have 60° seats with a vast assortment of nuts available.
You could get your rims machined to accept hardened tapered inserts to use the 60° nuts. It would require longer studs and if going that far you may as well change to 1/2".
Lots of options.

Here is another source for the stock Corvette specific lug nuts.
Possibly they are a better quality than the common replacements.
