Planning on replacing starter on my 81 with a mini. Any benefit over the two different designs?

I have the second style in my car. You can slip it in easy with headers installed.

I got THIS ONE from Skip White a few months ago and love it. The reason I got it from him was because it came with a lifetime warranty, and because I've purchased parts from him before and was very satisfied. The starter is basically the same one that everyone else sells (the bottom one in your links), but he had a good price and the lifetime warranty that no one else did.

I have the second also.
Love it, turns the 489 with 9.5 compression with no problem.
Hope this helps.

The secone one has the "R" terminal on the solenoid while the first does not. You will want the second one if you have the older style points style distributor.

Thanks Ben,

You are first to answer the question. My 81 does has HEI so I can install either one. So is the first one easier to line up since the starter bendix gear is not covered by the housing. Or is it a mute point because they bolt up without any issue. Bottom line for me is that SkipWhite sells both for the same price and I'm trying to figure out which one I should order.

The first one works on both 153/168 tooth flywheels. The 2nd only works on one.

So not a big deal if you will always run the same flywheel/motor setup.

The two starters are different because of the mounting holes, make sure which you need.
