I am looking at a nice 1976 corvette with a shifter problem. The owners Mechanic says it needs a new shifter and quoted $1000 in labor For the repair. I am mechanically competent so I plan on doing it myself but I was wondering what is involved in replacing the entire 4 speed shifter. I have done some googling to no avail. Any help would be appreciated.
If the problem is truly with the shifter, you might consider an upgrade to a Hurst Competition Plus shifter. Precise easy movement, spring-loaded to neutral.
Gary68 what do you mean by "the whole assembly", as in whole shifter assembly or the whole transmission assembly. I appreciate the input so far, I will post a youtube video when I check it out later this week.
For $300, you can buy the shifter mechanism, handle, ****, shift rods, and shift arms, new.
To remove a trans, rebuild, reinstall with new clutch, pilot bearing will cost about $1k. What exactly were you told the shifter problem was? Synchros, sliders, forks? Those are all internal.
He says the car cannot get into third gear and his mechanic said it needs a new shifter. Or atleast thats what I thought he said. He speaks poor english so its hard for me to understand the problem. Here is a video of the car that he has taken.
He has told me the shifter has never been replaced in its history. But its almost 40 years old so one of the other owners could have definitely changed the shifter at some point.
its a auto car that someone stuck a manual trans in......pass on that beater. really it has issues you can do much better unless he is just handing over the keys and even then i think i would pass on that pile.
