I have a 1978 Corvette Pace with the "cup" style door handle. When I first bought the car, the drivers side door handle was loose. I removed the door panel, to find that the bolts had fallen off of the door handle. I found the old bolt, and simply put it back in. -- Probably ignorance, but I just assumed it had raddled loose after years. A matter of a month later, the door handle was again loose.
The design is a stud bolt that turns into the handle, and a nut that turns onto this.
I did not pay too much attention last time I tried to fix this problem. I don't know if the teeth on this stud are just worn -- the did not see too bad though...
My question is this, have other people had this problem and if so what is the best resolution to this problem? Is the problem with the doorhandle being stripped, or is it likely the stud? Should I try to get a new stud to fit, buy a new doorhandle, use loctite, etc?
Welcome andrew, Yes the stud is threaded into the handle then the nut holds it tight. ( the handle to the door) Some times if you tighten the nut to much it will turn the stud also. Yes it can shake it self loose. You can put some RED loctite on the stud into the handle part then even Stake it with a center punch so it won't come out. The nut is all you need to hold it tight to the door. Everyone must be out driving. It usually does't take this long to get a answer. :)
If the handle is stripped, and the stud won't hold, AND you decide to buy a new handle, but the GM real deal handle. That's the expensive one. Don't buy what is advertised as the "foreign repro". It's cheap for a reason. Chuck
