79 l48 stock engine. Driving home last week the engine started cutting out and backfiring. Pulled over and the carb was dry, towed it home and replaced the fuel pump. Engine fires right up, but the engine cuts out and then catches again. If I put it in gear as soon as I rev the motor it cuts out, now it's smoking out the carb. I just tuned it and it was running great I'm stumped at where to start. Electrical?
I would start with the fuel system. Make sure the filter is cleaned or replaced, confirm the accelerator pump is pumping. Make sure you have all the vacuum lines connected etc.
I have verified the carb has fuel, and the accelerator pump generates a nice healthy shot. All the Vac lines have been double checked. Fires up and idles on the high idle cam at around 1700 after a minute you can see the tach drop to 0 then it catches and bounces back up, drops again 30 sec or so later. Noticed the turn signals are not working, I'll look at the fuse box tomorrow.
Any chance that there something in the gas tank? My high school shop teacher told us the best way to ruin someone's day was to put a plastic ziplock bag in their gas tank. It will stop the flow of gas and than once the car stalls it will float off of the tank meter allowing gas to flow starting the process all over again.. I have to take his world for it, of course I would never do anything like that to anyone.
Fuel was my first thought, and since the accelerator pump wasn't giving a good shot when it first died I changed the fuel pump. When I did that I blew out the fuel line from the pump back to the tank so I'm pretty sure the line is clear. The fuel filter is new, but maybe I'll get another one just to be sure. I'll check the cap for pressure as well.
Thanks
