Watching the dyno guys yesterday, I've gotten fairly interested in dynoing my car. Only problem is, watching another one of the dyno guys yesterday, I started to wonder just exactly what would happen if I went WOT with the 700R4 and it decided to kick down to second....
(I do believe you run the dyno in 3rd gear, as it is 1:1, no?)
How many of you have dynoed w/ a 700R4? Any tips? I just might run it this saturday!

Re: How do you go WOT with a 700R4 on a dyno? (Pacin'California)
Greetings,
The cure is at your local dealership: It's a piece that installs in the transmission to allow WOT at any speed and was standard in the GM police cars. Yes, B&M makes the same thing, but the GM one is cheaper...If I remember rightly it cost me $14 about a year ago when I had an 86 project.

I would have thought the dyno guy would ease on the throttle to load up the rollers, not mash it so it kicks down. The dyno place we went to ran in second gear to WOT.

I haven't dynoed the car yet. I don't need the 4-3 kickdown prevention device, already got it.
I thought you ran the dyno in your drive gear. You run it in any gear, though? (clearly, first would wind up way too quickly, though.)

My Art Carr racing 700 has no kick down in any gear. It won't down shift until your off the gas coming to a stop at crawling speed. I have to manually do 4-3 & 3-2 and I now have no detent to ever put the car in first gear. With a 4.11 rear first would just blow something up.
I don't know how they did it - maybe give them a call

the test is at WOT, upshifts only, it will not kickdown during the test.
i'm sure glad i don't have an Art Carr trans, the magic of automatic instant downshifts can't be over stated.
Re: How do you go WOT with a 700R4 on a dyno? (Desertdawg)
Greetings,
B&M calls theirs a downshift eliminator...Can't remember what GM calls theirs. I got the idea from the transmission shop as I wanted to have the B&M one installed, so they sent me to a GM parts counter and I just asked for the device that prevents a 700R4 from downshifting and they looked it up on the computer and handed it to me. I asked about specific application in case I wanted another one, and they told me any police car with a 700R4 has it. I was shocked at the price being so cheap, as the B&M one was about $30 at a local speed shop. As far as install, I have no idea, as I let a local shop do it because for whatever reason I can't rebuild an automatic transmission. I've tried on a few occassions to no avail. Fortunately I can do everything else!

Once you get to a certain power level or have bad rear tires you can't have the tranny down shifting because your going to loop the car off into something. Wet roads would really be dangerous. The fastest way around a turn like a long on ramp is to use enough throttle to keep both the front and rear sliding at the same lateral rate. Neutral through the turn with no under or oversteer. I can induce either with a change in the throttle. On the way to work this morning, I dove into a turn to fast and the front end washed out. I was sawing the wheel back and forth to scrub off some speed till it bit in again and by then I was back under power with the rear sliding out. The worst thing that could happen to unbalance your car is some tranny doing auto shifts up and down. I would have been off the road over the curb and into the guard rail this morning or lots of times.
If I feel the need I can pull the shifter back for a down shift to 3 or 2 and it's so instant that if I'm already on the brakes going into a turn that it will cause the rear to hunt around because of compression braking and the big rpm change. I drove around four years with an Art Carr full manual 700R4 3800 stall with lockup in every gear. It was like a clutchless 4 speed. I'm just trying something different auto upshifting and 3500 stall 9.5 inch. :seeya
I have to say that this tranny is the best setup out of the 8-10 trannies that have used and destroyed in the old 79 Vette
