Default hard starting when warmed up

My car starts fine when cold or shortly after. After driving for a while if I shut off the engine and let it sit for a few minutes its hard to start. Engine turns over fine but acts like not getting spark. I have a Petronix module with about 1k miles. Could this be the problem? Any ideas appreciated. Plugs are new.

How new is the engine? If it's a freshly rebuilt engine then this is pretty common. A new engine is tight and when it gets heated up everything expands making it hard to start until it cools down. It could be a bad ignition module. Your starter could also be getting heat soaked. Another possibility could be your timing, running too far advanced will make a hot engine hard to start. Good luck, I hope you can easily track down the problem

Incorrect timing and starter heat soak can cause hard starting, usually confirmed when it sounds like the battery is weak (the engine turns over slowly).

Is your engine running too rich? Pull your plugs out and see if they are black.

If the engine is turning over normally, then I would say it's a carburetor or ignition problem. If it were me, I would spray a LITTLE starting fluid in the carb and see if it starts. If it does, then you have a fuel problem.

If not, get an old sparkplug, and break the outer electrode off. Then, disconnect a sparkplug wire and attach it to this test sparkplug. Using gloves, position the plug's center electrode really close to a good ground source. Keep away from the belts and fan, in case you get shocked and jerk away. Have someone try to crank the engine. You should see a spark, blue in color.

Could also be problems with emissions equipment, if your car has it. I can't say how to test that stuff. I just jerk it all out (No emissions tests here in SC)

Hope this helps! :chevy

This happened to me one day at the parts store just after they had closed the doors and went home. Turns out the timing was way advanced. Once it got turned back to where it was supposed to be, everything has been great. No more hard starts.

If you have starter heat soak engine won't turnover.

Thanks for all the replies. Engine turns over at regular speed(no heat soak) it just acts like its not getting fire or gas when warmed up. No one mentioned the Petronix. I remember a while back quite a few people had lottle good to say about them.
