[RESULTS] 700R4 Shift Points Dialed In
First Adjustment:
After installing a different governor with heavier weights and springs, the 2-3 and 3-4 shift occurred too early (basically stack shifted during light acceleration). At WOT the 1-2 shift occurred at 6K rpm (perfect for me), the 2-3 shift occurred at 4500 rpm (too early) and the 3-4 would occur shortly after that.
The 1-2 shift was now fine due to having installed a stiffer spring in the 1-2 valve prior to installation. (we anticipated too quick of a shift from the beginning.)
Second Adjustment:
Drained fluid, dropped pan and removed the 2-3 and 3-4 shift valves from the valve body. Stiffer springs were installed in these valves based on my trans builders best experienced guess. Also, while the pan was off, I requested a slightly crisper shift. To accommodate this request, the spring tension in the shift accumulator was shimmed up from ~55 lbs. to ~75 lbs.
Results:
After these changes, at light throttle, the 1-2 shift is at ~2700 rpm. The 2-3 is at ~2900 rpm. (a little too high but not too bad). The 3-4 shift happens at ~50 mph.
At WOT, the 1-2 shift is still at ~6K rpm (w/ good second gear scratch), the 2-3 shift is now at ~5700 rpm (nice -n- crisp) and the 3-4 shift is at ~5900 rpm, and yes, by now, you are FLYIN'! :yesnod:
More time could be spend fine tuning the shift timing but I'm pretty darned satisfied with it right where it is, especially at WOT. The ONLY change that I might consider is to lower the 2-3 light throttle shift point just a little.
The kick-down is AWESOME! It is very responsive.
One other adjustment that I need to continue working with is the T.V. cable pull geometry. It is coordinated perfectly with the throttle blades at off-idle but the T.V. plunger bottoms out just shy of the carb being able to reach WOT. This is just another trial and error adjustment associated with using a Q-Jet that was not originally equipped with 700R4.
To those of you still not satisfied with the performance of your 700R4. It can be better. . . MUCH better. Don't wait for it to happen all by itself, find someone who can help you dial in the shift points.

2nd gear scratch . . . sure wouldn't know what that is!  With a full tank of gas and a passenger, I'm lucky if I get a 1st gear chirp!
