Default A/C help needed

Well after three years of putting it off, I'm finally getting around to fixing the air conditioner on the 77. I have power up to the pressure switch but have to use a jumper wire in order to get the compressor to kick in, it won't engage without the jumper wire. When I started I didn't have any power at all. what would cause this?

Low or no freon will cause the low pressure switch to keep the compressor from cycling and burning itself up. Jumping the switch tricks the system into thinking everything is OK as far as pressures are concerned. I would invest in a dye kit and black light... add dye and a pound or so of R12, or R134 if it's been updated and see where the leak is. Then it's a simple matter of repair the leak, suck all old oil out, vacuum purge, add PAG oil and fill with the correct amount of R134.

Thanks for the information, after reading this I think I will take it in and have a leak test done and let someone that knows what they are doing check for any leaks. I know the previous owner took it to a shop here in town and had it converted and they replaced some of the parts.

I would take it all apart and put in new seals at all connections, replace the drier, then pump it down to see if it hold vacuum. DO NOT USE DYE, it make a mess that you will never get rid of.
