Default Oil system mysteries ?

While reading throuh HPBooks "How to rebuild your Small-Block CHEVY", I saw a picture of the lubrication system (page 108).

But wait, what's the deal here ?

Is it true that the oilpump delivers UNFILTERED oil to the main & rod bearings, and only the main oil galleries on top of the engine (feeding the cam bearings, lifters & pushrods) receive 100% filtered oil?

If there were some metal chips in the oilpan, they would be forced thru the main & rod bearings, but could not harm the cam & lifters since all oil to them must go thru the oil filter?

I'm asking because I found some metal chips in my main bearings - do I have to tear the motor apart to change the cam bearings or should they be OK ?

IN A NUTSHELL:

The picture looks like the oil from the pump cannot go straight to the top, but must go to the right and thru the oilfilter in order to reach the top main galleries - TRUE or am I getting something wrong here ?

Greetings,

Martin

All the oil goes through the oil filter, except in the event that the filter becomes plugged. Then the oil bypasses the filter through the bypass valve ( the thing your filter screws on to). Was the metal really a metal chip, or was it bearing material?
