Hello,
to jump right in my 82 crossfire has a fast idle.took it to a shop and they set the timing and it brought it down a little. but it still runs around 1400 at idle . i replaced the cts, not much help . it does drive and idles smooth. just high. put a gauge on the map senser hose and it reads 19 at idle. there is no vaccum in the small hose that goes to the egr. and the 3/4' alum pipe that goes into the air cleaner has lots of vaccum, place my hand over the end and the the car starts to die.
help please.
Generally this issue is cause by a vacuum leak .... I would start there .... you should have some vac reading at the EGR ... so that's a great place to start ..... check all the lines and remember the ones that go into the cabin (heater lines) and to the front of the car (headlight system) .... could be also the EGR needs replaced ... but wouldn't go there until all basics are confirmed .....((there are a couple of threads on how to check the EGR))
Also make certain the lid on the intake is tight .... my nickle is on a vac leak .....
I second-vacum leak. I have had lines come loose and break. I also have had the top of my manifold loosen up. With the air cleaner off check the bolts holding the top of the manifold are tight. Then do the vac lines one at a time removing them and blocking the port with your finger. If the idle slows you know where to search for the leak.
changed out the temp sensor the other day. didnt help.
today I chased vaccum hoses. the hose that runs from under the plate to the cpv valve was to big so i changed hose and replaced the cpv just in case and the idle dropped down to 800-900 and sounded great. thought i had it fixed. took it for a spin , when i got back home it was idling back up to 1400-1500 range and staying.very frustraiting. had to walk away for a bit.
Can you push the idle down by hand with the air cleaner off??? If you can it might be IAC motor raising the idle and getting stuck backing it down.
Another though I was having is a crossfire doesn't like sitting or having a dead battery. This condition puts the ECM in learn mode and you will experience a high idle until the ECM gets its parameters back. Then it will settle down. Usually with in 10 good aggressive rides will straighten it out.
Another though I was having is a crossfire doesn't like sitting or having a dead battery'. There's a lot of truth to that statement. I learned that in the first couple months of ownership. Had a high idle as well, over 20. Did some vacuum work and drove her hard and it cleared up. I'm convinced she's not happy sitting too long.
Did you check the TPS setting? The voltage setting is suppose to be .525 +/- .075 volts. I had the same problem till I got the proper setting
No not yet . ive been having high vacuum thru the breather tube, so i desided to install new intake and top plate gaskets. when i removed the top plate I noticed a intake bolt missing.thinking thats where the vacuum problems at put on the new gaskets, all bolts and put it all back together. I'll let it set 24 hour to let the sealer beads cure and test it this evening. hoping that will fix it.
Update...fast idle/vacuum leak fixed...it was a missing intake manifold bolt that was causing vacuum into the valve cover breather. apperently the owner before me forgot to put in all the bolts. The car is now running great. Thanks for all the advice...
You have a great driver now! I would only advise to install a trans cooler and make sure the TV cable going to the trans is adjusted right. Tighter is better than looser. Your trans will thank you!!! LOL
