My speedometer stopped working last week so I'm trying to get the cable off the transmission so I can spin it with a drill and figure out if that's the problem or not but for the life of me I can't get the thing loose! There isn't enough room to get a wrench in there or anything else I can think of. 1980 corvette with th350 trans. Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated
Try some long pliers but if you can't get it that way, another way is to move the cross member. It is a pain but you will be amazed how much room there is then.
If your 80 has cruise control, you have two cables. One goes from the speedo through the firewall to the CC transducer (the short one) and then another one (the long one) goes from the transducer to the tranny. You might have a bad tranducer that is keeping your speedo from working as well.
The car does have cruise control but I still haven't been able to remove the cable from the trans. I just sprayed it liberally with some penetrating spray and I'm hoping it loosens things up enough to get it off without having to pull the crossmember
did you have any luck getting the lower cable off, i am in the same boat, i dont want to remove the crossmember if i can help it, mines seems like its stuck or something i cant get it to budge, i can move it slightly but it wont back off
I did end up getting it out. For a long time it would only move slightly-much like you stated. I couldn't get it to move at all using any kind of wrench. I sprayed it liberally with penetrating fluid and let it sit for a week. Then I came back and after a little bit of elbow grease was able to break it loose by hand. Where did you get your replacement cable? I had trouble finding one that is the proper length and think I found the right one at Willcox: http://willcoxcorvette.com/product_i...oducts_id=8627 (assuming your car has cruise)
yea mine has cruise (not that i have ever been able to use it, but i guess getting the speedo to work first is a start) i thought i might be not seeing a locking pin or something on it, i havnt got a full cable as a replacement yet, but everyone i have looked at is a 50" cable, i just picked up a universal cable, and i was going to just replace the inside, but if i can get it off then i will buy the lower cable. i will soak it with some penetrating fluid this week as i have to put a new set of wires on, so i will be right there to try it again. i got my fingers crossed i can finally remove it and see if its just my cable or the gear itself. hey you are pretty close, maybe we can email or something and swap parts or try and help each other out, i would love to be able to see another 80-81 to compare. i can fix almost anything but nothing is like having another one to see that is correct or close.
