I'm being offered a vortec 5.7 for cheap. Seller says its a roller cam and sent me a picture of it from the front. Any way just by looking at that to tell if its a roller. I thought the rollers had a plastic timing cover with two dimples in the upper quadrant. The heads look right? Here's the pic, many thanks, bob

From: Las Vegas - Just stop perpetuating myths please.
So why can't he read the block numbers so u can post them here if u want to know what it is? Stamped number will be on pass side front - include VIN #. Casting number is on drivers side rear.
If he won't read u the numbers let him have the "good deal".
Hmmm,I'm thinking pre 96 truck or Caprice block, not many of the Vortec truck engines came with the fuel pump mount drilled and machined, ask for the head casting numbers at least. How cheap is cheap? It's likely a decent engine, just make sure it is as advertised and what you want for the cash.
I agree with all of you, Excellent points. Pretty sure its a car engine, they had the fuel pump boss, but it wasn't completely drilled for the pump drive rod. I've sent him the casting #'s I'm looking for and he hasn't replied ...yet. also asked him to pull the masking and take a pic of the lifter valley. Many thanks for the replies, respectfully , bob
this is what I remember a 5.7 vortec timing cover looks like, I dont think they put them on any thing else
