Default Are Spark Plug Covers Necesarry?

Just built my motor and am trying to decide the best way to route the plug wires back in. Are the spark plug covers which route the wires through the engine mounts really necessary? Looks like a huge PITA to me so is it okay to just route them on top of the valve cover and then down?

Do you have headers or cast manifolds?

You need to run them under the motor mounts and thru the boomerang shields like factory.
