This is confusing - I thought this was ironleg's thread...

Ironleg, if your problem still exists, please post a picture of your serpentine arrangement.

So this is to say that if the gentleman used a 160 degree thermostat, he wouldn't get an over-all lower coolant temperature? My experience has always been that a lower temperature thermostat has given me a cooler running engine and has kept my maximum temperature super near the temperature of the thermostat rating. W/ a 160 degree thermostat, rarely do I experience the temperature over 160 degrees, only in extreme conditions, ie; like my first posting states. So would the thermostat (rating) not have a direct bearing on the maximum temperature of the coolant? Or are you saying that it does, but only providing these other functions are sufficient/up to snuff? Thanks in advance.

Thanks iron, I certainly didn't mean to jack your thread and don't think that I did but if that is the impression received by others it was not my intent by any means. I thought I was staying on topic and sharing what I had done which you indicated was also the path you were taking. Just don't want any hard feelings from anyone, just trying to participate and help out my fellow brothers in the Corvette world looking forward to seeing your photos.

The thermostats job is to block the flow of coolant to the radiator until the engine has warmed up. Once the engine reaches its operating temperature (generally about 200 degrees F, 95 degrees C), the thermostat opens. By letting the engine warm up as quickly as possible, the thermostat reduces engine wear, deposits and emissions. Once your 160 opens, it won't close again until it gets around 160. At this point the cooling is all the other items in the system, so I don't see how a thermostat can cap the maximum temperature.

Thermostat only reflects the opening temp of the coolent. If you car runs at 220 deg then changing the thermostat will have no effect. To prove this remove the thermostat completely and see what happens. No change! Now if the thermostat is blocked with crud and not flowing correctly when open then that WILL make a difference.
