Default 2 problems after engine install

1st problem, before start up I went over every thing to make sure I was good to start, I hooked up linkage and shifted through the gears no problem untill Ishifted into reverse, I can't it out of the reverse detent or it won't go back 1 through 4 shifting pattern, it stays is the reverse position, I went under the car and made sure nothing was hanging up all linkage is in the correct position 1-2, 3-4 and reverse all seem fine.

Next problem, when I started up the engine the starter is running with the engine, I must have hooked up something wrong.

Sounds like your shifter needs to be adjusted. Disconnect the rods and place the shifter back into neutral. There is a slot at the base of the shifter assembly that takes metal insert/tool to keep the shifter in neutal. You then reinstall the rods and adjust their length with the swivels to keep everything aligned.
Here's a link with a picture and detailed instructions.

You switched the wires on the starter solenoid.

Same transmission went back into the car, the shifter linkage slipped back into the shifting leavers with no problems.

I did change to a mini starter and it only has 2 places to put the wires, big eyes to the battery pole, small eye to the small pole and that pole has only one wire.

I will taking the mini starter out and will be putting in the old one (rebuilt) to see if the starter will be running with the engine.

Also will be taking all the linkage off of the Trans. to see if I can run through the shifting pattern, I have no clue on that one. Thanks for any help.

Does your 69 have the interlock cable that prevents it from being shifted from reverse with the key off?

The mini starters only require one wire on the s terminal, the wire from the coil should be left off the starter or it will keep the starter engaged like yours.

OK, I figured out my shifting problem, when I reconnected the linkage, I placed the connening rods to the top hole on the 1-2 3-4 instead of the middle holes, re-connected on middle holes and shifts like it did before.

For my second problem, I took the starter out and hooked it back up, this time I only placed the battery cable and the other wire with the fusible link to the big terminal, I left off the other wire that hooks up to the fan motor also a big eye terminal lug. And YAHOO it runs. You can check some of the pictures in my garage album. Plus I did post on you tube, Harris1507

Had to fly up to Jersey for the weekend, I will be home on Monday to fine tune, set the timing and carb and adjust the clutch. I still have a motor mount problem
