Default clutch experts, need an answer quick please

This is for a C4 but i think it's more of a general question.
I'm replacing a clutch, the transmsiison is still out of the car and i'm checking the clutch operation. When the clutch is depressed, i can see the clutch for move the thowout bearing, (it pulls it on a c4).

Here's my question, when the clutch is depressed, should i be able to turn the disc with the alignment tool by hand? Because i can't. Thanks.

I'm not sure that is a valid test. Most all clutch discs designed for street use have a "wave washer" between the two clutch facings. This is to spread the surfaces apart slightly so that the clutch will engage smoothly. With the clutch pedal depressed, the engine torque is enough to let the clutch slip. But your hand on the alignment tool has virtually no torque, so it is hard to impossible to turn the alignment tool.

That's not to say all is OK, but just to question the test methodology. Maybe somebody else will chime in and add to this or disagree with me.

Thanks for the reply. We just finished the install. 20 hours, what a long day. We decided to wait until tomorrow morning to start and test drive the car. Keeping my fingers crossed.

The tool is just made to center the clutch disk to the pilot bearing. With your tranny you are stabbing the input shaft through the splined clutch disk into the pilot bearing before you tighten the PP down to the flywheel.

It sounded like to me that they were trying to rotate the clutch to line it up because they could not stab the tranny.

I would have put a breaker bar on the damper crank nut and rocked the crank shaft back and forth to get it to stab in. Like in a fixed x-member car where you have little room to jocky the tranny to stab it in

Well we started the car up and it won't go into gear while running. I can put it in gear with engine off start the car up and it will move normally, but won't shift. So the clutch isn't releasing all the way.

Sounds like the clutch disc may be installed backwards, new ones are sometimes labelled to avoid this mix up because its easy to do.Looks like you will have to do it all over again...

I know that I have a different setup than the poster, but something as simple as to short of a pivot ball does the same thing

The clutch can only go in one way, i already thought of that and pulled the bellhousing back off once to make sure. I thought of the pivot ball issue also, i have to look into it even more. I have asked the question on the c4 forum, as they may be more familliar with the issue
