Hey Guys,
A friend of mine gave me an Accel distributor for a small block chevy w/ tach drive, so I thought I'd put it in my 76 last night.
The cap and rotor are the same but the body and gear are not even close:
I'm not sure I can even close the hood if I install it, but if so is it possible to swap out the shaft and gear? Or is this just not the right dizzy for my car.
Thanks,
- Jay
HA HA -It would if you cut the top off an welded it to the bottom of your old one. And still no tach drive. By the way don't you have an electric tach in you 76?

the chevy hei has been adapted to a multitude of different cars, fords, toyotas, even a few BMW's, what you have is one of the ford units. Dont throw it away, a ford person needs it....badly. Your mech not knowing the difference in the lower housing is distressing..at best
the cap has the plug for the tach, but if its the wrong one for the distributor...
I'll let you know his explaination after I see him again.
thanks guys.

Yes you can find knock offs for almost any engine. I have a Chinese HEI on an AMC 304 in an old Jeep.

Any HEI has the terminal for your tach signal out. Normally tach drive means gear driven output to a mechanical tach

He probably just glanced at the hei "coil in cap" without looking any further. The cap should fit what he gave you.
As mentioned it's still desirable.
I don't remember what they look like exactly either without comparing, could also be for AMC etc. If it has a hex oil drive, it's probably for Ford.
amc , over the years , used a variety of other makers engines in their products, ford , chevy, buick, they werent picky as long as it was the least expensive.
trivea, they rebadged them with their amc logo, but that old saying ,'looks like a duck, quacks like a duck' ...

yep, hex oil drive.
I feel like a moron now asking if I can put a ford dizzy in a chevy.
I didn't look any farther than the cap myself, I had no idea they were adapted for fords.
At least I learned something.

If you are still looking to swap out your distributor, be careful of the knock-offs (non name brand). The drive gear on the bottom can be incompatible with your cam and they should be replaced with your old gear or a new stock replacement.
