So I'm still working on this Borgeson swap and I just got a standard (non-tele) 68 column so I could complete the job. The column was super corroded but I finally got it all apart. WHen taking it apart I noticed there was no alignment chisel mark on the top of the steering shaft so I marked it but in the process of getting it all apart the mark is now gone. Any way to figure out how to align the shaft and the steering hub? Trying to figure this out before I put it back into the car.
Thanks,
Tony
Activate the turn signal switch, rotate the shaft and reverse looking for the minimum point where the cam resets the switch going both left/right, then figure out where 1/2 way is between the 2 reset points that is where center will be.
This paper will walk you through a step by step procedure to center your steering system. You have to start with the steering gear exactly on center. At that point, your road wheels should be pointing straight ahead. If the gear is on center and your road wheels are not straight, you need to fine tune the system by adjusting the tie rods.
Even if you do not have a flat on the input shaft of the steering gear, (or a chizel mark on the end of the steering column shaft) you should be able to eyeball the parts (i.e. stop pins at 6 and 12 o'clock, flex coupling attaching bolts at 3 and 6 o'clock) with the gear exactly on center.
