Default No heat

I tried to turn the heat on in my '73 and found that it does not work. My shop manual still hasn't arrived and am trying to diagnose it myself. I removed the console and the temp. control cable is attached and moves freely. Looking through a resto catalouge, I see that there is no water shutoff valve for the '73's.
Does the cable go through the firewall and move a valve somewhere along the water hose?
Any ideas?

Yes, the coolant is full.

Thanks

**edit** There is plastic piece in-line with one of the hoses. There is a vac line from it to an outlet on carb below choke.

Are you sure that a PO has not installed manual cutoff valve(s) somewhere? Follow the hoses from the water pump and instake back to the core, and see if you can find a valve somewhere. My guess is that you find one on one or both of the hoses.

I can't find a valve anywhere after following from manifold to firewall and back to pump.
The PO did replace the hoses and water pump. Does that plastic piece with vac line attached, go on a specific direction or on the in/out hose?

Could it be on the wrong line or backwards? BTW, what is it?

Well I went out and let the car warm up to temp and got underneath it. The hoses are hot at the core. The air blows out at all of the proper vents, BUT, It isn't slightly warm... Any ideas??

I would like to loan you all the heat from my 78. I can't get rid of it.

That temp cable should open and close the temp door. Here is the description for my 71....I believe your 73 works the same way. It might be moving freely because it's not attached to the door any longer and the door is in the closed position.

I just did the heater core on my '71, and was surprised to also see that there is no cut-off valve. It seems the door in back of the heater coor is controlled by a vacuum switch and that's how the heat gets to the car. I'd look for that line, see that it's getting good vacuum as a start.

The temp door shown in post #6 is controlled via a cable by the Temp control on the right side of console control. No vacuum in that part of it.

The Air door and the Defroster door ARE controlled by vacuum via the left side control wheel.

Since you have no heat, I'd look at the cable to see if it is connected to the control wheel and the Temp door.

Pete's right, when I was putting it back together that vaccum seemed to be in the right position for the door and I didn't have a diagram on that job. That temp cable is in view from the passenger side, behind the dash pad. A needle-nose removes that pressure clip pretty easily.

Thank you GQ82 and everyone else. If monsoon season ever ends here in North Carolina, I might be able to spend some time working on that and a couple other minor issues. It has rained every day here in Aug except for 1. Get the small things done, then it is time to replace, rebuild complete suspension.
