Anyone who is having an issue lining up the pins on the rag join, use 3/8" rubber air hose. It is braded, very strong and is a tight fit over the pin and aligns them perfectly. You can leave them in place as well.
Great idea! I had mentioned using masking tape to wind around the pins to take up the gap between the pins and the cutouts in the steering column detachable flange. It would centralize the pins during the steering column installation process.
A chunk of air hose is a much cleaner idea. I see no reason why you couldn't leave them in place.
Back in the late 60s there were molded caps that were installed on the late C3 flex coupling pins. I am not sure if they actually served a dynamic purpose or if they just centralized the pins.
In the early seventies (through the end of C3 production) plastic spacers were installed on the flex coupling pins. The spacers were pulled off after steering column installation and thrown away.
