Default 1980 Half Shaft Removal

What socket do I need to remove the U bolts from the rear U-joint ? I can't get any to grab and they don't look stripped

It's been a few years since I pulled a C-3 rear end apart, but if I remember correctly, I used a box/open combination wrench. I don't recall being able to get a socket and ratchet in there....

You might try a 1/4 inch 12 point socket.

BTW, when I put mine back together I got replacement HEX head bolts from Van Steel.

Not all of these Cars left the Factory with the same Bolts. And who knows what somebody has put in since. It could be 8pt Torx, 12 pt Hex , 6 pt Socket Head or just a regular 6 pt Hex. What ever You put back in should be Grade 8 or better. This is not an area to use a cheap socket.

Torx look like an allen key, except with a * rather than a hexagon.

There is also e-torx, which is the reverse (the fastener is shaped like a torx socket).

Torx fastener:

Mine '81 automatic the same: 1/4"-12 point
Used a 1/4"box wrench for it.
They were installed with blue locktite.
