Default Testing the temperature gauge in a 76 C3

I have a one wire lead that goes to the temp sending unit located on the drivers side of the engine block between number #1 and #2 cylinder. Installed a brand new engine wiring harness and the wire plugs in as it should. The temp sending unit is also new.

Problem - the gauge is dead

I was told to pull the lead off the temp sending unit and touch to ground which should make the gauge max out with the needle going all the way to the right on the gauge.

It didn't happen.. The gauge is still DOA. ''How can I test this? (everything else works fine (with the exception of the clock which I don't really care about)

I am guessing the gauge worked correctly before? If so, sounds like a problem in the wiring. Assuming you are getting power to the gauge (meter or test light on power terminal). Use a jumper connected to ground to touch the terminal for the sender. This will show if the gauge is working. If gauge works it is the wiring from the sender.

Not sure if the gauge worked when I purchased the car a few years ago. As soon as the deal was made I rolled it into my garage I took it apart. Now I'm chasing these small problems around. I'll check it out - thanks for the feedback.
