Default 1969 427 engine worth

I was offered a running 390hp for 500.00$, I offered 350.00$ don't think he will take it. Is 500 worth it. No mods, don't know the mileage, no smoke or knocks.

Never has been rebuilt,it came out of a truck from 1969

As a core engine I wouldn't give that for it. If it's in good shape I might give your offer or bargan up to $400.
Like Alaskaman said, if it fits some application you have or want to have or may have in the future, I'd just pay it. You might run into someone who really wants it and make a few dollars.

Weren't there were "short deck" passenger car blocks and "tall deck" truck blocks? It would be good to chase the casting codes and be certain... I doubt any truck engine offered 390HP, and I don't think passenger car intakes, etc fit the tall deck engines.

buy it,as the parts are worth more than 500.check the deck height (10.8 pass car). the crank should be 6223 forged, that no# was also used in a 396 but the third counter weight thickness is less.Even if it has to be bored your only expense is piston, closed chamber heads will limit you on piston choices unless you get them custom made. Trw makes cast pistons, closed chamber(good for 6000rpm)pick a cam and your good to go.All this assumes you want to rebuild engine.they came in 2 and 4 bolt main blocks,2 bolt is fine to 6000rpm.If you keep hp resonable you'll be fine. 427 and 454 blocks are the same for all pratical purposes.Remember 427 internal balance,454 external balanced so don't use a flywheel or damper from a 454 on a 427.

First things first, as mentioned - Get the block and casting numbers. See what you are buying other than word of mouth from a seller.

The seller is full of ****. 427 truck engines were tall decks, and certainly not 390 hp.

I agree. I have traveled long distances to buy parts from somebody who has had them 25 years and knows what he has only to find out that what he has had for the last 25 years was wrong. If for say its a 4 bolt main"512" Block with a standard Bore the Block alone is worth $2500. If its a 454 out of a surburban a whole lot less. Get the Numbers.

Big trucks are tall deck. The pickups 1/2, 3/4,1 ton came with standard deck blocks. They are 4 bolt main HD with forged cranks. $500 is a good price if it isn't worn out. Great start for a build.

512 casting blocks seem to demand good $$. I was looking for one last year, some of the dealers are asking $4k for a virgin block 4 bolt.

The truck 427 would not be a 512 casting but would be pretty much identical for a bare block build. HD 4 bolt main, Forged crank.
