im considering replacing my stock air cleaner on my now stock 1979-L82...
my questions are...
which Edelbrock (sp) will fit with enough clearance under the hood?
and...what do i do with the things that used to go to the air cleaner?
such as the breather hose that goes to the valve cover and the flex pipe that goes down to my exhaust header "stove"??
and isnt there a vacuum type hose that goes to the carb too????
thanx
i just did it a few months ago.. the heat stove over the manifold can be removed. As for the breather hose, put an oil breather in it's place or you can put the breather hose from the valve cover to the underside of the air cleaner. The vaccum hoses that go to the back of the carb can be plugged. The only other thing i needed was an inch riser because the air cleaner was hitting some of the linkages on the carb, and there is still plenty of room between the air cleaner and the hood. So nothing to worry about there. :seeya
my next cleaner will be cold-air induction (L88 style)
someone has a nice write up on cleaners and the cfm the different inches allow through...most are running the 14" I think....(good grief...did I answer anything you asked...I don't think so, o well, file this under needles info)
Once you change your air cleaner, instead of throwing out your heat riser and stove, I would be interested in those parts. I basically need all of the hardware between the driver side manifold and the air cleaner snorkel.
I bought the 14 in. diameter, chrome, 1 3/8 in. drop base, 3 in. element, air cleaner assembly from http://www.summitracing.com/. Part # SUM-239433
It fits fine and it looks the same as the Edelbrock and costs less. It also comes with a K&N filter. Summit doesn't advertise the filter as a K&N but I called and they said that's who makes the filter. :yesnod:

:yesnod: Summit does this with a ton of their "Summit Brand" parts. Its great when it shows up in a different vendors box, with a summit sticker slapped on it and you save some $ in the process.
thanx everybody!
and BTW...sorry but i save ALL original parts that i replace...
i bought the car in 99.9% original condition and most of everything is in near perfect cond.
never know when i might want to put them back on :)
With an open element filter you will get more air, and your car will perform better when it is cold. But once your engine warms up you will be getting warm air instead of the cold air you got with your stock twin snorkel cleaner, and your performance will go down.
i do not argue that a bit...
sometimes however, i wonder how much "cold air" it gets being here in florida...we havent seen a day less than 80* for a LONG time...its more like high 80*s and 90*s here usually...and with summer comming 80*s will be our "cool" days :(
but we all know that the hotter it is outside...the hotter it is under that hood...
anybody here running an open filter have any input on this?
did you notice a reduction in power changing over?

That looks like a great deal! Complete setup for the price of the filter! I am going to order one. Thanks for the post vettesite.
well...today i "got ready" for the new air cleaner by removing the stove and chimney and the cold air inductor part of the stock system...leaving just the breather itself...
i was real curious how it would perform sucking hotter "under the hood" air...i must say that even after it warmed up i seemed to have a little more power (not less) as a matter of fact i ran it through the gears and got a 3rd gear squeek from the rear tires! something that i have NEVER been able to do...i guess its because its airflow into the carb is less restricted now...and it will be even less with the new breather...
my conclusion...more air is better than less cold air???
one thing i REALLY liked was that WHA! sound at WOT...God i love that sound!
