Found my tank is leaking. Minor surface rust in a couple of spots and its leaking on one. Thinking it was a metal imperfection as the tank is about 8 years old. Canadian made. Is this normal?
I vote , no, and sounds like you get to replace it...again. They make a gas tank sealer that you pour in, swirl around, let dry and then use . it works well, I've used it, but not on one of these where the tank is right behind where I sit. you might want to use it inside your next tank prior to install to avoid this issue
If its already leaking I would replace. Yea it might seem minor but there are plenty of other areas that are weak and will start leaking after fixing the ones you see now.
Have you looked inside the tank to see how bad it is? Did someone pour something into it, other than gas of course?

If it was just surface rust, I would coat and keep it. But penetration means it will probably come back. A radiator shop could boil it out and maybe solder the leak. BUT the time money and effort to do this makes a $100 to $200 new tank look even better. I am planing to seal my next new tank. Just follow the instruction on prep so that all of the stamping lubricant is removed and allows for good adhesion.
