Default Need trans help for my 74

Purchased a Turbo 350 from my local auto parts store then installed a B&M transpak street-strip. Trans shifts perfect in drive, but it does not seem to shift as hard as i thought it should.(No chirp from first to second while in drive.) But when pulled into first gear at a dead stop and nailed, it shifts out of first and then holds in second. If tried to pull back into first from second it does nothing, no first gear. Put it on a rack and it is physically being put into first so there is no linkage problem. I had no problem installing the shift kit. I don't know if I did something or it was a factory problem. Any thoughts on this? Where do I start to look for the problem.
Thanks for all input.

Do you mean that it will not shift from second to first at any speed? Your description sounds like you are winding the gears out. If not, then ignore this. Your transmission sounds normal. If you have wound 1st gear out, you go to second gear because the engine has reached it's rpm limit. If you could wind 1st out, go to second, and then downshift back into 1st, something could break. At least with every automatic I've had, from a Chrysler 727 to a Metric 200, this is a safety feature.

There are usually 3 levels of kits: RV/street(Slight upgrade over stock), Street/Strip (Best all around), and full race. Maybe your kit was level 1 performance, for RV/street and Towing. Some of these kits let you decide your level of shift with different parts. Also, some of these kits require that you use Type F fluid instead of the GM Dexron -III fluid, to get the best shift performance.

So, as long as the shifts are better than what stock was, I think everything is ok. I've had a little experience with these things, but maybe someone with more experience could elaborate.

it will not down shift into first gear (Manually) at any speed. even at 25 mph. It shifts fine in drive, up and down. I put the street strip kit in with all the springs and vavles. It should hold in low forever....but it shifts out and the holds in second. I put it on a rack and pulled the shifter into low then disconnected the shifter cable and it is going into first gear. It's driving me  Been using B&M Trick shift too.
