Has anyone had any problems with Eckler's diff side yokes?
I ordered two of Eckler's differential side yokes part #32654...the heavy duty ones. Got them in the diff, got the diff mounted, and installed the new half shafts part # 46096 which I had also bought from Eckler's and the straps will not tighten flush to the yokes. It is only a couple of thousand's gap, but there is a gap. All parts are new and clean from any trash. It is almost as if the caps on the yokes were not cut enough. Also, the old ujoint caps measure the same as the new ones on the shafts, so I believe the problem is in the yokes.
Has anyone on here ran across this type of problem before?
Yes, as long as when they are tightened they are tightened equally. I can tighten one side of the strap all the way down, but then it leaves a bigger gap on the other.
I am sure that the needle bearings are all still in place, the ujoints fit in the yokes perfect. It's just when you go to tighten the strap, it is like the strap either did not get enough cut out of the center or the two pads on the straps where cut too much. The straps are a beefy steel strap/cap type.
JRACER - if that is your car in the avatar you are using the u-joint straps on I'd think twice about that. I have some cap-style retainers if you'd like to try them (see pic). These were on my stock-style yokes before I went with Tom's axles which are like the outboard reatiner/yoke. If you'd like I'll send them to you so you can see if they work? If you want you can just pay me a fair amount if they work? Gary
WOW glakore, that is very generous of you to offer to do that, and trusting. I must say that I am impressed and thankful.
First off, no it's not the Vette that is in my avatar that I am working on, but the one in the avatar is my Vette. It has a ford 9" diff in it.
The one I am working on is a 71 and the new yokes come with straps that look just like yours that you have pictured. The one's that I got have an arrow on each one that would point to the inside...does yours?
Anyways, I talked to the company today and this is what they emailed me: "INCLUDES YOKE CAP, SCREWS AND SNAP RING
ROCKWELL 62 STRENGTH
Cap screws torque to 35 ft/lbs. There will be a .050" - .100 " gap between the cap and the yoke."
No problem. I figured if they worked you could send me a few $$. If not there wouldn't be any need to commit. I wonder if torquing them down and running the car and retorquing them may "seat" them? Mine were fully seated before I took them off and upgraded.
I upgraded to the Toms inner axles that are shown in the attached link. I used Tracdogg2 off of the forum to have mine set-up. He does fantastic work. He suggested the Toms axles because of stock axles consistently twist. Yours look pretty stout? I see where its says they are aircraft quality steel.
