Default 1975-1982 tail lamp conversion kit

I recently ordered the Corvette Custom Taillight Conversion Kit, 1974-1982 (A6874) from Eckler's. The discription read:

•Easy To Install Kit
•For Replacement Lenses Use P/N A6872

This kit allows installation of bubble lenses on 1974-82 Corvettes. Kit fits both urethane and fiberglass bumpers. The supplied housings mount to the bumper with two screws and scotch-lock the new inner light sockets into place so that you have four brake lights. No cutting of wiring necessary. The stock, outer twist-in taillight sockets fit into the new housings. Kit includes lenses, housings, gaskets sockets, screws, bulbs, flasher and instructions. No permanent modifications.

Well it doesn't and no technical advice on how or if modifications can be made. Has anyone of you installed this kit on your 75-82 vette with success? The pictures below illustrate my problem. As you can see there is quite a variation in base size between original and conversiion kit. It is impossible for installation without "permanent modifications" as I see it.

Yes you need these, you probably have two in each housing now. My kit came from a different supplier but i had extra ones.

Will see if i still have my instruction sheet

The only instructions i have is the wiring for the tail light sockets. My kit came from Mid-America.
The white part is held in place with the two screws, you have the two studs sticking out, this is where it mounts.
Make sure you put all 4 in the same position, 3,6,9 o'clock.
The holes with the threads is how the lens mount, **** test try the threaded screws first, i had to use a bottom tap and clean the threads up. Cant remember the tap size.

OK...this is the same configuration of my '82. It just didn't look right to me, but I did not assemble the bases yet, just dry fit. I will give it a try after the weekend when I get my car back from paint. By the way, if it works, I will have the original light lenses, that are in very good condition, for sale if anyone is interested.
