Default 72 starter bolt question

Finally getting my 4 speed 72 back together and brought the starter in for a rebuild. When I went to bolt it up the end cap takes two long bolts rather then the one long one shorter bolt I am familiar with. It bolts right up and may be fine but I haven't tried to see how it engages with the flywheel.
I know it is the same starter I brought in as it has the same date code and part number but I am wondering if they put a different nose cap on it. I took it off the engine 10 years ago and my memory doesn't work that far back so it is possible that is what it was when I brought it in.

I have never seen a starter with equal length long bolts. Is it possible this is a newer end cap? Any ideas of what year they had this bolt set-up?

Surfer69 - may be a stupid question given your title but what the heck - is your car a 69 small block?

When I look at bolts from the supply houses they all seem to be one long and one short.

look at this link with pictures, 3 different starters, I believe 1st one is you application, and ask whether the rebuilder changed the nose. Manual and automatic appear to have different listings.

Mine looks like the back of the first starter and the nose from the second. I will go ask them but it seems strange they would switch the nose. If it bolts up and matches the flywheel I am thinking it should be fine. I did put in an 11' clutch and will need to look at what I took out.

The first starter uses parrallel bolts the second uses staggered unless your block has 2 sets of bolt holes it wont fit.

I think there was 3 different noses (?)
One with aligned bolts (newer chevs?)
One with the staggered same length bolts
And one with the staggered one-short and one long bolts

My 72 BB, Auto is this style

But may have been fondled over the years

how easy it is to forget what and where parts came off a car 10 years ago, that is why it is important to label, take pictures so we can install every thing 10 years later. It is important to put associated bolts and nuts with the part it attaches so you don't go thru this. I am not pounding on you, but to let newbies know this so they won't have the same problem.
