It depends: For some people it is no more dangerous than talking to the person in the passenger seat. For others, it is as if they are carrying on a conversation with someone with their eyes closed. MJ

It's not me I worry about. it's th 18 year old who comes screaming into the movie theater parking lot in his Camaro, doing about 35, and almost hitting my brothers' Cobra head on that i worry about. or the stupid fat Biatch who does a Uturn i the middle of the busiest road int own, driving me onto the sidewalk, then blowing through a busy intersection, causeing a 3 car collision that i worry about. Yes, these events did happen, within the past 2 months

I heard there was a study of statistics that revealed that talking on phone while driving is as dangerous as driving while intoxicated. The statistics say that more accidents are caused by distraction from talking on phone as were attributed to DWI. I believe here in MD as well as some other states, a driver can be ticketed for using cell phone while driving.
Re: Is Cell Phone use while driving dangerous? (VetteNut72)
I vote with the "it depends" group. Changing stations on the radio, looking for your favorite CD, checking a map, etc., can all be at least as distracting as using a cell phone. I've only seen it a couple of times but people actually read books while driving on the freeway! The only car I've ever hit was driven by a woman that had was at a stop sign and had turned to attend to a child in the back seat. It wasn't until the impact of me T boning her that she realized that she'd taken her foot off of the brake and had rolled into my path.
When my kids were learning to drive, I nagged them about "the most important thing you are doing when you are driving is DRIVING". Ten years later I'm a passenger in my daughter's car and her cell phone rings. She immediately pulls over and stops, then answers it. She sees my grin and gives me a smile. "I didn't forget what you taught me Dad." She did admit that she doesn't usually pull over for a call and this event had been only been because I was there. I still felt reassured though that she was at least aware of the importance of paying attention while driving. Sure wish everyone else was.

Truck drivers have been communicating with CB Raidos for a long time and nobody complains about that.
BINGO! dead on
CBs have been in cars and trucks for more than 30 years and they take just as much concentration to keep them tuned while your talking.
When was the last time you herd any complants about them.

Hi
Should be 3 polls.
OK when handsfree system is used.
I hate people driving with one hand and holding this GSM with the other hand. This is for sure very dangerous, and forbidden by law in most Europe countries. How is it in the States ?

There are plenty of times where I think yes and plenty where I vote no. But in the end, after some heavy thinking I ultimately have to vote with No. Being stupid, and not paying attention to what you are doing is dangerous. Talking on a phone isn't necessarily either of those things.
Personally, I think a phone is LESS distracting than a back seat full of 8 year old soccer kids.
Re: Is Cell Phone use while driving dangerous? (VetteNut72)
At this time it looks like the cell phone users who continue to justify their use while driving is a small percentage. Maybe they are the ones the rest of us are complaining about! Did you notice that most of these justifications involved "yea for some people they are dangerous but not me"
"Justified Denial"
When will these people wake up and realize they are jeopardizing ther own safety and the safety of their passengers ALL TO TALK ON THE PHONE! Responsible people who know when its time to drive and when its time to talk are also put in jeopardy through these actions of justified denial.
They are not safe for everyone that uses one while driving - you are not superman and you are subject to all the other cosmic rules and laws that apply to the rest of us. Continue to use them while driving and the odds will catch up with you but because of justified denial, I'm sure everyone will be told about that stupid driver or some mechanical problem but you will know what really caused the situation.
If you don't care about your own safety then at least think about how much a scratch or chunk torn from fibergrass will make your shark feel.
Re: Is Cell Phone use while driving dangerous? (VetteNut72)
Quite frankly, I have to say yes. Do I still use my phone while driving? Only when necessary. I have an earpiece and mic, and I can answer the call by hitting any button. I don't place calls while driving, but I will answer if it rings. However, I do find myself being distracted from the road by just talking on the phone, even with the hands-free stuff. It's weird, because I don't get distracted talking to a passenger like I do when on the phone.
