I purchased a 79 L82 from someone who did nothing to it for the entire 5 years he owned it. It was running a little rough so I replaced the Distributor Cap, rotor, plugs and wires. According to the Haynes manual I bought, some models need to have the vacuum hose disconnected and plugged in order to tune it correctly and it refers you to the under hood label. My label is pitted and unreadible. We tried it both ways an it still runs worse than ever; roughly and with a knocking. I can use all the help you can give me.
You need to disconnect and plug the vacuum hose to the distributor.
Set the idle as slow as you are happy with to minimize the effects of the mechanical advance.
Check for vacuum leaks.
Good luck with it.
Hate to say it, but if its still got the factory L-82 cam in it some of them were known for going flat. You might want to pull the valve covers and verify that all your rockers are being acutuated. If all is well there, recheck your firing order.
If you're looking for the spec off the label, here it is:
12 degrees advance. Spark plugs should be gapped at .045. Automatics have a drive idle of 700 rpm, manuals 900 neutral idle.
Also, check to make sure all vacuum is good.

Thanks for all of the replies. After carefully looking under the hood, there are several vacuum connections either disconnected or believe it or not, I actually have three lines capped with Golf Tees. I am amazed the car even ran. Since I am not sure how the vacuum hoses are suppose to be or what goes to what, I ordered an Assembly Manual from Zip Products. Hopefully this will show the correct connections and I can get this thing running again. I sure hope I don't miss out on an entire summer of cruising trying to figure this out. Thanks again.
