TH400 Tranny went out. It started whining one week and went dead. The next week I changed the filter/fluid, modulator and it ran fine for a few days. Then, I drove it and it started the whine again and wouldnt move at all. I pulled over for about 15 minutes, made a few calls. I started it up and it drove fine again. I still got it towed home to be safe. So, I got another th400 tranny that needs rebuild and im doing it myself (meaning I have 2 TH400s). I have the B&M kit and I got a 34 element hardened sprag. This will be my first rebuild.
The current tranny is 3 speed auto, manual valve, 2400 stall.
I guess I have everything except the converter.
The other tranny has 3 spd + OD.
What converter do you recommend?
I have a 3:73 rear end, 274 cam, 350 SBC, 600 CFM. I do not race.
You seniors have a wealth of knowledge and experience.
I NEED ADVICE.
Get the ASIG(?) book on your 400. Not a bad one to learn on either. Other than it's heavy..
With your 34 element sprag, you'll probably need a clutch drum that's compatible with it.
I've priced the B&M kits- little high.
Get a Trans-Go shift kit.
I already bought the BM kit for $180. But I will use Trans-Go when I rebuild the other one.
I do have a transcooler im eyeballing but wasnt sure if it was necessart, now that you mentioned, im sure i need it.
What size torque converter do you recommend, and how do you guys feel about the inline transmission/oil magnet filters?
I'd like to suggest that you learn on the 400, if you like, sell it, buy a 2004r already done and install it. I dont have one but from reading the threads on here , I soon will.
yes sir, Since I do have two th400, I planned on a learning experience. Is the 2004r a version of a 400? I see that they look the same, what makes it better? Also, I was just looking for a transcooler that bypassed the radiator, any suggestions?
I did have a guy offer me a th350 (complete & ready) for $900 with the removal and install. I considered it, but........
Im looking at these transmissions, and the (minor) changes that gave new names. The 2004r came in 1980. The (new) tranny i have to rebuild came from a 1981 chevy truck 2WD, 3/4 ton. I called GM and ran the VIN and it will work in my '73. So im guessing I have a 2004r. But what do I know.
ok, so the one I have MAY?? be a 2004r. It is 3 speed plus overdrive. what about these trans coolers? I have seen you, (the Marine) comment on another post concerning bypassing the radiator.
you're refering to a different 'marine', theres a bunch of us on here. You need to identify which trans you actually have prior to buying parts, the 400 doesnt have an electricl connection would be the easiest.
