Default Temp probe location

Hello all, I am trying to get my factory temp gauge working. I removed my aftermarket probe from passenger side head was going to put on driver's side but the plug in stripped out when trying to remove it. So I moved the am probe to the intake by the tstat and put my factory replacement in passenger head which leads me to my questions:

1.since I've moved am probe temp reads cooler, could this be from header heat difference? Should I be worried?

2. The replacement probe I got from corvette central is reading to ground. Is this correct?

Thanks for all the help!

The sender to ground should read ohms and if it is working correctly here is a chart for the 1968-1974 gauges.

Can the location switch make a difference.. sure it can. The heat on top the engie is not going to be as hot as by your header. How much??? It really shouldn't make a huge difference. As you can so by the chart below the hotter the sender the smaller the change at the high end.

Thought terminal was not supposed to be grounded, just terminal housing.

Ok.. the two terminal sender is for the TCS controls...

the green wire for that switch runs over to the relay on the firewall..

The one for the gauge was a single wire sending unit.

You need the single spade sender. their part number 303586 for the dash unit.

Or

I'm not sure what you are doing and maybe I'm lost... I read you post above again and you removed an aftermarket sender... The wires that ran to this sender are what color? Green and Green?

So.. I think you need to isolate the original green single wire for the dash unit..

The sender I have is the 6490453. The aftermarket is a gauge/sender combo. No electric wires just a solid bare copper wire with probe attached. I was going to use two gauges until I new the factory gauge was reading correctly. When I get home I will try to upload pics.

I tried adding pusher fans to help keep it cool in traffic. It didn't help.

I just installed a procomp BBC long high volume aluminum pump.

Small air dam on bottom of front. to force air up to the radiator is there.

I believe all air is out. Parked on incline and jacked up passenger side so that radiator cap was the highest point of cooling system.

As far as the temp sender, I. Grounded the green wire to temp gauge and needle did not change.
So I pulled gauge out and ran a jumper from ground terminal to green wire terminal and needle moved and stayed above 210. Car hasn't been running, just had key in on position.

I know the green wire is making it all the way out to engine bay because I can see a difference of potential when I measure green wire to ground.
