Default new exhaust question

Getting ready to install headers and dual 2.5" pipes back, my question is should I have all the pipes welded together or use clamps or a combination? The pipes came from Allens which includes a combination of front, middle, and elbow to mufflers. I would appreciate any and all thoughts. Thanks in advance!!!

Doug there is advantages and disadvantages with either route you go.
Welded is stronger I think with less chance of a leak. The clamp route has the advantage of easy removal of a pipe if you need some access room. I gues toss a coin. lol

Interested in hearing your thoughts about the system your useing.
I have a 79 that I would like to redo the exhaust on.

I agree. I am about to have exhaust installed also. Clamps give you the option to do it at home without a welder. Welding is the best connection but a permanent one. I got this idea from here and will be having a shop install a few V-band clamps in strategic places to allow for easy removal of transmission etc. Its welding and a clamp so a bit redundant.

I got a great deal on flowtech headers from jegs (they honored advanced auto discount and free shipping plus no tax) and Carlisle special free shipping from Allen's Exhaust. From Allen's, I got pipes and turbo mufflers. I can't wait to hear them. I am leaning at clamping front and middle pipes at center cross bar and welding middle to elbow to muffler. However, I would like to have a sealed system. What reasons would there be to remove sections of exhaust pipes? How have others handled their installation?

Nice clamps. Something to consider for sure.

I've seen those "V Band" type clamps and they also come in Stainless although if I'm not mistaken they're over $30.00 each. That gets to be a bit expensive if you consider you need up to 6 of them if you including the clamp at the muffler. That would equal 3 sets.

I put a stainless Allen's system on my '72 a few years ago and it fit beautifully. Did it with the car on blocks about 15" in the air out in the garage. I used regular muffler clamps but in S.S. from Summit Racing. Everything still looks great and no rattles or leaks. Finished it off with Dynomax Super turbos, too.

just did my exhaust last weekend, headers and dual exhaust. made my X pipe with some 90 and 45 degree elbows from auto parts, the pipes(hooker, pre bent for my 78) were ordered through the auto parts store and delivered to home. the welding that i did was both intake and exhaust sides of the mufflers and of course the x pipe itself. the connections into and out of the x pipe are clamps that came with pipes. the header and the pipes that connect to the collector are bolted with the 3 bolts that came with headers.

Mine didn't fit either cuzz I didn't buy hooker headers. Spent a lot of time making it fit. Cutting and bending and welding. Not the ideal route for exhaust gases but I saved a couple dollars that an exhaust shop would have charged.
