I took the car out for a spin today and found it popping throught the exhaust when I start to accelerate. I want to eliminate any stupid problems first. I have never dealt with the gm HEI units before and want to make sure I ran my wires right. Does anyone have a picture of the HEI distributor cap and what wires go where??
The 3 wire plug that comes from inside the distributor (pick-up coil) goes to the terminals closes to the cap. The brown wire is for the tach. The pink wire is the 12v source from the ignition switch. If you converted from a point system the pink wire must run all the way to the ignition switch and be a minimum of 14ga with no resistors in it. If you just spliced it onto your original 12v wire that went to your coil you will not have enough amperage and will get a miss at higher RPM's.
Perfect!! I think I have everything off a little. Looks to me like the 8 you are showing is my number 1 on the cap. I believe I have the firing order right, but am off on the cap placement by 1 cylinder.
If you had all the wires off by one position the car would not run and you would not be able to set timing. On my car #1 is at the position of #8 on bseery's diagram. But it doesn't matter as long as the firing order is correct and the rotor is point to #1 plug wire when the timing mark is correct.
