I had a question about carpet replacement on my 73 vette. I was wondering if anyone had has experience with carpet kits available from some of the parts houses. Does the carpet need to be stretched and or glued down? Can the installation be doe by an average handyman, or is it just better to go straight to a auto upholstery shop?
Its a job a novice can do. Just take your time and do it right.
The carpet comes pre cut. You need to remove the seats. Only four bolts to remove on each. Tuck as much carpet under the sill plate and under all the places you can.
I usually do not use glue in the front, but almost always use some 3M glue in the back, especially around the tire wells.

Installing carpet is realy not that hard. As stated above, it comes pre-cut and pre formed with padding if you so chose. You will need to "trim to fit" in some spots, and remove the seats, console panels, and sill plates, rear storage boxes, and any hardware. Save the old carpet to use as a template. It helps to trim the new a little before test fitting. Most guys use a bit of 3-M spray glue in stratigic spots to hold the new carpet/padding down. I would also suggest you purchase a heat barrier kit to install under the carpet. They are inexpensive, and when it's 90 degrees out... you'll be glad you did.

When I did mine, I didn't glue the carpet down. I did however glue down the heat barrier, but didn't glue the carpet to it, just in case I need to remove it for some reason
