I just ordered a nitrous kit from jegs, this is the description:
Performer Nitrous Systems
For V8 applications with standard flange or Q-Jet carburetors. Three ranges of adjustability provide power increases in steps of 50, 75 or 100 extra horsepower! Kit includes a 10lb. capacity nitous bottle (shipped empty), nitrous and fuel solenoids, spray bar plate, aircraft quality steel braided hose, nitrous and gasoline filters, jet selection, aircraft quality fittings, and all necessary switches, brackets, and hardware for complete installation.
When I told my dad about it he said it would blow up my stock 350 motor. He told me I needed to get a MSD system that would set back the timing when I used the nitrous. But I was told by other people that I didn't have to get a MSD system, And I could just put in on a bone stock motor.
I'M sure some of you have experience with Nitrous, what do I have to do?
The only way NOS is going to blow up your engine is if, A.) If you try to feed it too big of a shot. B.) Your are not watching your Air/Fuel Ratios or C) if your motor is already smoked and you try to feed it nitrous.
Otherwise Nitrous is just a gas which allows a much greater ammount of oxygen into the cylinders, which when ignited creates more power. Now if your motor has 90,000 miles and is ready for a rebuild, nityrous is only going to make matters worse and help you find every weak link!!!
That said.... I just picked up my NX system tonight!!!!!!:reddevil :D
Take great care when installing it, monitor you A/F ratio and have fun!!!
Re: Nitrous blow up the engine?? (ThundrKiss1965V)
Start small at first. 50 hp then gradually increase. NOS says a stock V8 will handle up to 140 HP. Just make sure the motor is in good shape, it should work fine. Just added a power shot system to mine. Haven't fill the bottle yet but won't be long. :chevy
Re: Nitrous blow up the engine?? (ThundrKiss1965V)
I have hooked up many Nos systems for myself , my son and the neighbour kids and we have never experienced a single failure. Transmissions yes but not even tired motors. I saw a beat mustang go from 16's to 13.9 with a 100hp kit. I NEVER jet for others over 100 horse, I do not change timming, plugs or a dedicated system for them. I run the jets square, that is the same nitrous and gas. I usually jet around .052 or 3 in both jets. The biggest bang comes with 100 HP. The 150 doesn't really make that much difference.
Try the lower amounts first to get a feeling for the stuff and never exceed 100HP. Forget about changing the timming at this level.
Thats a nasty Scene... but the fire was caused by fuel... Nitrous is an accellerent - yes, but if there was a Blow off valve on the bottle (as there should be) there is no way the bottle would rupture. He obviously had some other issues that led to that happening!

Re: Nitrous blow up the engine?? (ThundrKiss1965V)
MSD has nothing to do with making your engine "nitrous" safe or whatever.....but I agree with the above post - start with 50hp & work your way up.
It usually doesn't get 'hairy' until 150hp + !!!
....also, no matter what - if you hit the button & nuttin' happens - let it go.....some idiot at the race track hit the button twice & turned his 'rustang' into a 'burnt-stang' !
I ran a 125 hp plate system on my tired L-48 engine with a stock fuel pump. It knocked 2.5 seconds off of my quarter mile times and I experienced no adverse effects. I have since taken the nitrous off of the car and put another 70k miles on the car. The engine now has over 200k on it and still runs fine. My only advice is to listen to the above posters. Don't screw around with the calibration of the system and don't go above 100-125 hp range. Also, make sure you have sufficient fuel supply (volume and pressure) getting to the plate.
