Default TH400 rebuild

Before I rebuild this tranny can someone answer a question for me?

I changed the carb from a 750cfm to 600cfm, could that change cause a vacuum problem creating bad tranny performance?

I was going down the highway and it wouldnt shift up to 3rd...just a whining (but still moving). I got home and changed the fluid and filter (clogged) and modulator. There were metal shavings which I was told is normal. The next morning the car ran fine going to work. At lunch I drove around the corner and it whined and did not move. I pulled over and it moved again, but slow. I got to a light and it stopped again. I pulled over and waited 15 min, pulled off just fine. WTH. I have since got a rebuild kit, and ready to do work. But something doesn't seem right.

I have a mild cam and the headlights never worked. I did a vac test and it was about 10-12hg before the swap. I am going put to test it now, but would the carb make that much of a difference.

I guess a NEVERMIND is appropriate. Vacuum is still 10-11. low enough. Im just gonna rebuild.

Any tips, tricks, or advice on a TH400 rebuild?

Mine wines when stopped or at idle or very slow driving then stops once I start moving. I am wondering what next.

Sometimes a converter will whine when the fins start hitting each other. That's a sign you are about ready for a rebuild, as the shavings make their way through the tranny and make a mess of lip seals and bushings. Causing a pressure drop and clutch pack slipping.

All good to know. I thought about the converter less than 200 miles on it. Vacuum is something to look into.

Did you put fluid in the converter before the indtsll. If not that will kill'em quick sometimes.

I probably should start another thread as I think I am high jacking the OP thread. But yes a full quart fill and changed fluid and filter after a couple 100 miles. No metal shavings. Whines in gear only.
