I was driving home from a Corvette Show in Mass. on Sunday evening and about 5 miles from my house the car started "laying down" whenever I moved the gas pedal. It has never done anything like that before (unless you count the time I didn't look at the gas guage for a week or two). It got progressivly worse as I got closer to my house and I JUST made the slight incline up y driveway into my garage. I was pretty tired and aggravated so I just closed the door and said the hell with it until tomorrow.
I won't bore you with the details of troubleshooting it but what I ended up finding was that the fuel pump(in the tank on an 82) became disconnected from the steel line inside the tank!! There is a short piece of rubber hose that connects the pump to the tubing and there are no clamps or anything on it from the factory and SOMEHOW it disconnected itself and was pumping a majoriaty of the gas back into the tank. I ordered a new pump for it anyway and it will be in on Wednesday. AND THERE WILL BE CLAMPS HOLDING THE HOSE ON TO THIS PUMP!!!!!! :) :)
IM a lilttle confused by your description, but is the clamps going to inside the tank?? if so, make sure they are stainless steel!
if not, nothing to worry about.
at least you know what the problem is
From the factory, they don't use clamps. GM depends on the tight fit of the hose to the tubing and the pump. What I believe happened is that the rubber hose deteriated to the point that is was not as tight as it should be and I have been fighting a bad vibration in the rear of the car at 70+ miles an hour. I believe that between the two situations, this was the cause of the problem.
I've warned the '82 owners of this several times. The hose becomes rotten and won't hold the pressure any longer. I used nylon wire ties and a tight fitting fuel hose to solve the problem.
If there are any '82 owners out there that still haven't changed this hose, do it now before you get stranded on the road. Mine fell off after hitting a bump in the road.
