Default 81 headlight trouble, question (electrical)

Exactly where does the ground wire for the headlight harness attatch to the frame, engine, what ever? What I think is the ground, black wire near the alt. becomes 12v when the lights are turned on. I believe I have some sort of backfeed from a short or something? More details available if needed. thanks

They actually worked for a few minutes but, then nothing. I need hints on where to check for a short giving back feed through the ground wires. When I take the plug off the dimmer and turn on the light switch, all three wires are "hot" . Also, when a test light is put on a ground wire, the switch turned on, 12 volts show up. Any ideas of where to look?

You are correct, the black wire is the ground for the headlights and it attaches to the radiator support.
You get 12 volts between the alternator terminal ground connection and where?
Have you tested and confirmed the alternator is good.
