? Tilt/telescopic swap
How difficult is it to swap in a tilt column in place of a standard column? Found a nice 71 conv for sale, but at 6ft3in, I need tilt!
It looks pretty straight forward -- rag joint, support bracket inside, electrical. What am I missing?
Also, whats a reasonable price for a tilt column? Contemporary lists them at $425. Are they pretty widely available?

The tilt and telescoping (T&T) column is a direct bolt-in swap with the standard non-adjustable column. In fact, any T&T column from 1969 through 1975 will bolt-in to your 1971. The column attaches to the flexible coupling, attaches under the dash, and all the electrical connectors interchange directly with the standard column.
Just make sure that the column comes with all the necessary horn button, telescoping lever, extension, hub, turn signal and tilt levers, etc. Your original steering wheel itself should bolt right on to the hub.
A 1976 column will also bolt-in but the steering wheel as well as the horn button, hub, extension, and telescoping lever are all unique to that one year. So unless you like the 1976 style wheel and you get everything with it, stay clear of this one year only design.

I just sent six scans of the various AIM sheets for the 1969 through 1982 Corvette steering wheels, horn parts, and telescoping hardware. Terry Rudy has already posted them at the http://www.corvettefaq.com websight. The sheets should go a long way in helping you to understand exactly what steering wheel hardware is in each year C3 Corvette.
