Default * Alternator Wiring Help *

I recently installed a 100amp alternator and would like to see pics of how to install a heavier gauge wire to support the extra current.

Which gauge wire do I use?

Do I have to install an inline fuse somewhere along the line?

What size fuse?

Any help is appreciated even if you don't have pics.

Thanks, Les

Is it a replacement style alternator? Or did you purchase the single wire setup?

I ran an 8 gauge wire from the positive post on the back of the alternator to the large positive post on the starter. I didnt remove the original wire but left it in parallel with it. works fine. most of the rebuilders sell them already made up in any length you need. used a 120 amp fuse. hope this helps

Replacement style which can be used as a one wire setup.

OK, Cool. What size alternator did you use? I guess I need to use an 80 amp fuse since my alt is 100 amp and the link you provided states to use a fuse at 80% of the alt's output?

no , its the same, but I fused it to the output of my alternator, if the alternator starts juicing higher amps then that , I'd like the fuse to pop before it damages things

It's fused so that the current draw doesn't exceed the capabilities of the wire. It doesn't matter how many amps the alternator can provide.

My alt. is one of the skip white 120 amp versions. I'm also running two big electric radiator fans, a mini frankinstarter, High amp driving lights. If something spikes, say a relay fries, it gives it a bit of time to unspike itself. You are best staying with the 80% thinking, its safe and wont hurt the performance

power master has some excellent tech on their site
btw you will be happier with it as a three wire, there is a lot of tech. on the difference from a one wire

Heres some tech from powermaster
http://www.powermastermotorsports.com/charge_wires.html
the absolute best advice I can give it to follow powermasters recommended way of doing it
1. they built the alternator and know what works
2. if you dont do it their way it may void your warranty
3. their warranty is only good for 12 months from the date of purchase
hope this helps

Yeah, I'm just gonna throw an 8 awg wire in between the alt and the starter with a fuse in between and wait for the fire.

the wire will become the fusible link if the fuse is rated higher than the wire....
