Hi guys, thanks for the help with the brakes and bleeding them, now i need help on figureing out how the belts are supposed to go, got no manual at the moment, the ones I ordered say nothing. We think that the previous owner just through some belts on, so we dont think they are right, I need to know the right belts/parts numbers and what they go around. Right now all I got on the car is a single belt, and idont think it is righ since it is going around the fan and the power steering, we read that the power steering was supposed to go to the crank. Please help me, thanks. If you have any pictures that would help too. As soon as I get the belts done i might be ableto get the vette out of the garage for a couple of minutes. if it doesnt rain.
Edit: sorry left out what the engine is its a 70 454 if you need more info ask and I will attempt to get it.
Thanks for the help,
Richard :seeya
vip3r, I will try to help, although I think you should invest in a GM shop manual. Got mine through ebay for 12 bucks. It make life so much easier. My 80 small block L82 has three belts as follows: Coming off the main crank pully....one belt for the alternator, another belt for the cooling fan and the AC unit., another belt for the power steering unit. In that order from the motor out to the radiator. Not sure if you have all those options. You have a BB, but you get the picture. Hopefully someone will jump in with a pic. Good luck, L8TER, Paul.
There was a belt discussion in the Factory Correct Restoration forum, which resulted in diagrams being posted for 67s and 68s. The belt configurations are diagramed in the AIM (Assembly Instruction Manual). The belt configurations vary quite a bit depending on the options and various combinations of those options on the car, specifically, power steering, air conditioning, and AIR pump. So which of those do you have? MJ
I have power steering thats it on the engine right now, it look like at one time there was an a/c but not now, I am not sure about the air pump, the belt that was on the car, that broke 20 min after I bought the car is about 49 inches, its the altinator belt, we tried to find a belt at napa that was about that length. the belt we found was 47 5/8" and it isnt long enough even to just make the main crank and hte alt. we think bubba has been messing around quite abit because the other belt that is on the engine right now goes from the power steering to the fan/water pump thats it. is that belt on there wrong if so how can I loosen the power steering to take it off?
does anyone have the BB page from the AIM on this subject, and can post on here or e-mail to me @ rtrentii@yahoo.com thanks I get paid monday so thats when I will try to find an aim I can buy. thanks for the help. sorry I am so Dumb on this stuff, but I am new to the field of cars. I Know i need an aim/shop manual.
OK, I just happen to have my Chilton's manual, but it shows only the small block pulleys. DON'T do what I did...mine had only a single belt and I didn't pay any attention to it...it broke and tore up my shroud. Yep, a $10 part caused $700 of damage. If you just have an alternator and power steering, then you should have three belts...two of them run the same track...around the crankshaft, water pump, and alternator. The third belt goes just around the crankshaft and power steering. Well, if your alternator just has a single belt pulley then just use one belt, but make sure it's a good quality belt that fits the grooves. Perhaps someone with a 454 will chime in with the belt sizes that they are using.
thanks, so the belt that didnt break, the one on the power steering and the water pump is on thee wrong? if thats the case can you tell me where I can loosen the power steering to get that belt off, me and my dad looked and we couldnt find the nuts/bults. Thanks again
vip3r, Stop where you are!! Like Rockn-Roll says $700.00 bucks worth of damage!! The reason you are tearing up belts is because they are mis-aligned on the pully system. First things First. Get an AIM manual, (about $30.00), or a GM Shop Manual. Chilton's Manuals are ok too. You will not regreat it. Belt application is not that big-a-deal. However, it must be done correctly. As far as the power steering unit is concerned, there is a bolt/nut underneith it. Get a wrench/socket on both ends of it to loosen it. It will then move back and forth for adjustment purposes. If you're not sure if you have an air pump or not, it may look like an odd ac unit with tubes that go into either sides of the exhaust manifolds. Go slow, double check your work and you will get positive results. Hopefully that frontal pic of a BB will come through. L8TER, Paul.
Thank for the help, I think the previous owner didnt even have the right belts on, he only drove the car to get it to the port, my guess is he put them on just to get the car there, thanks again.
I also have the AIM... the belt configurations AND pulleys vary.
The previous owner(s) may also have installed the wrong pulleys. If you do have the wrong pulleys, then parts houses will not be able to just "look up" the belts... you will need to go the trial & error route.
Also, there are issues surrounding the "idler" pulley which is used when the car has factory A/C.... people remove the idler and replace the belt with a shorter belt (water pump to crank) which requires no adjustment, but is tricky to install.
Also... the AIM is incorrect for the LS5 bracket mounting.- Option N40 (sheet A7) (power steering) depicts support brackets (pic #14) 3986109 and (pic # 8) 3878240 incorrectly. The way they show it, the brackets can not be mounted.
Small Block routing, belts, pulleys etc are not applicable to the LS5.
