Default Emissions Testing on a 1978 for GA

I purchased a 1978 vette from another state the car has headers, magnaflow mufflers & 2.5" exahust no cats, no smog pump no emissions stuff. I have a question in GA is the car exempt from getting emissions testing? I live in Fulton county.

Why would you expect it to be exempt? It was manufactured and equipped with exhaust, fuel vapor and other emission control related devices?

You have no worries, no emissions to do for that year. In GA there's a 25 year rolling exemption, thus this year 1987 is the oldest car that's subject to emissions testing. The other poster obviously dosen't live in GA, i've lived in GA for over 20 years and learned the smog rules.

Your welcome, i've currently got 12 registered cars/trucks from '68 to '07 and have done a S10 V8 swap as well which requires you go to the EPA station and get "approved". I usually go through a car every couple years, so i've become very familiar with both the GA EPA and DMV.

Many states have exemptions for older vehicles that are usually 25 years and older including near me RI, MASS, NY, and I believe NJ. Very common-25 year old + cars passing emissions is ridiculous! How many of these older cars are even on the road much less driven regularly for any type of miles?

A lot of States (Like GA) recognize that these older cars aren't usually daily drivers and thus are not operated day in day out, and adjust emissions testing accordingly thankfully. Now there's also some like CA that don't think that way, and test the living crap out of every car that is tagged in their state. The state's DMV web page usually give guidelines on their testing and "Referee" stations, GA uses those for engine swap approvals and/or "problem-failure" cars that come in from other states.

Not really ridiculous. If the original equipment is on the car and operable, they pass emissions.

In Georgia you can also get a custom built exemption, and a Senior exemption.

That's right old Skoolers!!!! If you are old enough to not drive that much you can get a smog exemption.

That's just tooo kewl for old school.

I know that up there in New York and Jersey that you rarely see cars older than about 5 years old on the road. Everytime I go home to New York to see my family, I mention to my brother that, you New Yorkers drive only new cars. LOL! Here in Texas, (and in California, but Cali is into the smog free thing), there are many older cars and trucks on the road and used as daily drivers. My '81 Corvette isn't considered old at all here, it's just that there aren't many C3 Corvettes around, only a million new 'Vettes. There's a "House/Building Moving Company" in our area which has all old (late '40s to mid '50s) super heavy duty hoist and boom trucks that have beds that were MFGd f/ the moving of houses/buildings. And the guys who do the work are all in their 70s and early 80s, w/ the exception of two, who are grandsons of two of the old guys. I stopped and watched them work twice, once when they were moving the old Original Killeen Train Station. They work slow and steady and do everything w/ ease. You can tell they have been at it f/ a very long time, and they don't mind telling you some stories. A great bunch. **Sorry f/ getting off the subject, but a good example of old daily drivers. I drove my '62 Ford pick up f/ about 20 years everyday to work and back, w/ the original 6cyl, granny 4spd, and lowered w/ reversed eye main leafs and afew leafs removed. (Orig. had 13 rear leafs and 9 front, both w/ helpers) A very dependable truck. I was the 4th. owner. My daily driver now is a '95 Nissan pick-up, black w/ the orig. aluminum Nissan wheels, black tinted windows. A/C, automatic w/OD, 4cyl. It has 168,000 miles and runs great. The orig. paint is in great shape as is the interior. Know a guy who was going to prison and got it f/ $1,100. It's an extended cab job w/ the little sideways jump seats in the rear and the book value is about $2,400. or so. I'm a firm believer in what the New Yorkers call old stuff and what us Texans call newer stuff. LOL! As long as the vehicle is from a state and local where the climate is hot and somewhat dry, w/ the regular maint taken care of, you'll have a good lookin' mechanically sound ride f/ a long time and years to come. Long Live The Oldies!

You need to move out to country where there are no emissions test. I used to live in Fulton and now have my truck registered in Spaulding.

ha!!! If anecdotal evidence counts......I AGREE.

Being a Georgia resident, I believe I can pretty safely say that we tend to generally keep our vehicles a pretty long time.

I've lived and worked all over the south and Texas and it seems most of new fancy cars are mostly out of state.

With the possible exception of TRUCKS. We do love our new, shiney pick ups. Although my DD is an 8 year old truck, that is pretty new.

One reason to keep your oldies in good shape is taxes. In GA, they SLAM you on a newer vehicle for taxes. Add smog, and the smog test and it can get a little pricey.

I agree with this statement wholeheartedly. I lived in Georgia for since 77 and have spent the last 5 years working in Texas and Oklahoma.

The folks in Georgia hang on to older cars longer and take care of them better. Texas has an inspection program that may be prohibitive to hanging onto older cars. In the rural counties there is no emissions check and no inspection in the state.

Well I just registered the car and I did not need an emissions inspection. I want to say that if the car is 25yrs or older the car is exempt from emissions testing.

Here in Texas, they have emissions check in the urban areas, Houston, Dallas, etc., but not in the out-lying areas. And we do have regular inspections in Texas-unless I mis-understood you. And cars that are 25 years old or more are exempt from emissions check.

Easy Mike's statement holds true.

Operable has an obvious implication, but could probably be translated to "in good, working condition". There's no reason a stock anything should fail the emissions test if it's in good tune.
