A/C MOTOR STOPPED BLOWING! PLEASE HELP!!
well...i think mine was dying and may have now crapped the bed!
i checked all the connections that i could find etc...well, i didnt check for voltage...i didnt spend a lot of time on them actually except for checking and cleaning them...
and when i finally found the blower motor i thought YIKES!! if i have to change this, how the hell am i going to get it out through there?!?!
am i missing something here? what else should i check? if i have to change it, how hard is it??
it is SO darn hot here in florida right now and it is only going to get worse...i NEED to fix this badly....
thanx

I purchased a new fan motor from AutoZone. I don't recall the exact price but it wasn't very expensive. I'm thinking it was less than $20.
I've seen several forum members state that they used a fan that was built for a C4. They say these fans move a lot more air.
it just looks to me like there is too much stuff in the way for it to come out...it DOES come out the front? right?
i also find the C4 fan thing interesting...i would LOVE to have a more powerful fan motor! that would be great :)

So what did I do? Nothing... I was testing the AC one last time and found out that cold air was blowing through the footwell ducts and high speed. Could it be that small broken vaccuum line that I found a few days earlier? I haven't patched it yet, so I don't know!
It sounds like your blower unit is bad though. Good luck!
i want to check the voltage going into it 1st...is the purple wire going under it the power wire? ill probably change it anyways for more air but if the problem is somewhere else i want to fix it too...
how do you get it out of there?
The fan motor looks harder than it is , just keep some band aides handy. Mine fried the wire before I replaced it and than I discovered the vac. line problem. I also rtv'd the vac hatch door shut ( it was rusted stuck) to keep the outside air out. That is located by the base of the windshield on the pass side behind the plastic net thing. :smash:

Good luck...........

Are all of your blower speeds dead, or just the HI. Hi side has a seperate relay and 12 volt in line fuse. My high speed relay connector was toast.

By the way, I changed the blower motor on my '78. It wasn't bad. I took the cooling system over flow tank off as recommended by Haynes. (Gave me a chance to clean it out.) Still had to twist and turn it to get it past the AC hose etc..
I put in one from Auto Zone. Approx. $20.00.

it's amazing what happens to 25 year old electricals, the corrosion is horrendous, causing burnt wires, heated terminals, voltage drops across any and all heavy current connections.....and in a car, most all devices draw plenty of current, due to lack of system voltage....
decades ago when they went from 6 volts to 12 volts, they should have just stepped it up to 24 minimum the old military standard, or better yet 48 volts...and had over with it, saved a LOT on wiring gauge and current issues...

#2...the problem might not be the motor (although it probably is)
it just MIGHT be something else...
although the motors are the almost same, the squirrel cage is about 3/4" taller...
and the blades have more of a curve to them...i imagine this gives more blowing power...
well...there is NO WAY the squirrel cage will fit in the housing...so i figured i could just exchange the cages...
not so easy...the old one is held on with a nut...the armeture shaft is threaded on the end...
and the new one is a knurled shaft and the cage is pressed on...
they are the same length and the old cage "pushes" very nicely onto the new motor...
i thought about dieing some threads on the new motor shaft and putting a nut on it and then i thought id wait and see what you guys thought...
i want the delco blower motor because it is probably better than the "auto zone" kind but i wonder if its worth all this trouble...and it may not work anyway...
can you even thread an armeture? isnt it hardened steel?
it cost me $69 and they say the aoto zone one costs about $20...
i dont know what to do....
do the auto zone ones come with the proper cage height or do you use your old cage?
